November 2018

Random thoughts about what happened or what I came across this month.

I deleted Twitter App from my phone

I deleted the twitter app on my phone because I felt I could use my time to focus on other things, I still accessed twitter via my web browser on my laptop because I wasn’t going off twitter totally I just wanted to reduce the time I spent on it. How did it turn out? Alright tbh, at first I found myself going to the where the app used to be on my phone but soon enough my brain accepted that was no app there, I missed out on some trending twitter gist but it doesn’t matter cause I don’t even know what I missed out of, I spent more time connecting with people and watched a ridiculous amount of TED Talks — To think the app was always on my phone and rarely paid attention to it.

Cutest Humans of New York Story

What Brandon Stanton is doing with Humans of New York is laudable, it originally started as a photoblog and book of street portraits and interviews collected on the streets of New York City, however, this year they expanded to other cities.

The stories are usually sad or inspiring but I found this quite different.

Art X

In the spirit of trying out new things I attended an Art Fair, I was amazed by the level of creativity, for some artworks I thought to myself sure I can create this and for most I doffed my hat and told myself it was beyond me.

Conversation starters

How do you start a conversation without the usual “What do you do”? It’s cliché and while you might want to say there’s a reason why clichés are called clichés — because they are true. I think it weird how there’s just one major entry point to getting to know another person.

I still fall victim of starting with “what do you do” and to be honest it feels off starting with something different but I want to try something different.

A tip to using these question might be starting with radical candour which is telling the other person the truth that you have been thinking of how to start the conversation in a different way and you hope it’s okay to start with something not so conventional

Here are a couple of new questions that I hope I could start using.

  1. What would you be most likely to volunteer for?
  2. What are you looking forward to in the next few weeks?
  3. Do you like to cook? What’s the last thing you cooked?
  4. If you didn’t live here, where else would you choose?
  5. What’s your favourite emoji?
  6. What excites you these days?
  7. When was the last time you laughed really hard? What were you laughing at — or whom were you laughing with?
  8. If you were to give a TED talk this year, what would the title be?
  9. When was the last time you amazed yourself?
  10. What are three words your friends would use to describe you?

Chris Do x Seth Godin

I’m a huge fan of Seth Godin and Chris Do, two people whose generosity has made me a better person. I was so hyped when the two got together to have a talk, you should check it out.

Global Peter Drucker Forum @ Vienna

Earlier this year I wrote an essay on the topic “How to stay human in Robot Society” which was an entry for the Peter Drucker challenge and ended up being a finalist (top 10) in the manager/entrepreneur category of Global Peter Drucker Challenge 2018. One of the rewards of being a finalist was I got to attend the Global Peter Drucker Forum (all expense paid), it’s the world’s leading management conference. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I look towards attending future events.

You can read about my experience here

Book Read

I finally read Mere Christianity, it was a humbling experience as it offers a logical explanation to many concepts in Christianity. I appreciate the fact that it’s written in a simple style that makes it easy for anyone to read and understand.

December!
